Drumming
Please enter your message here.Happy birthday,Gary. We never met but I learned to play by listening to all the records you played on.I pass these gold nuggets on to my students now. From the Chiffons"He's So Fine" to all the FANTASTIC beats on the Dionne Warwick records to Van Morrisson's 'Brown eyed Girl"Which I still play in 4 different bands, you are THE innovator for a future generation of drummers to learn from.I've ended MANY arguments about difficult things to play by putting "The New Breed" up on my music stand.Thannks for teaching us ALL!!Ralph Onofrio Branford Ct.

DAD\\\'S 83rd BIRTHDAY!!!!
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DADDY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU"! TODAY YOU WOULD HAVE BEEN 84 YEARS OLD, CAN YOU BELIEVE IT! YOU'D BE PROUD OF ME, I'M STARTING A MUSIC CLASS FOR CHILDREN WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DELAYS. GONNA TEACH THEM RHYTHUM, BEATS, MELODIES AND TEMPO TO FAMILIAR SONGS. THEY'RE ALL UNDER 5 YEARS OLD, GREAT IDEA, HUH!! THERE ISN'T A DAY THAT GOES BY THAT I DON'T THINK OF YOU, CALL OUT YOUR NAME OR FEEL LIKE I SAW YOU PASS ME BY....BY THE WAY, DID YOU TURN ON THE FAUCET THE OTHER DAY, I COULD SWEAR IT WAS YOU? I KNOW YOU'RE LOOKING DOWN ON US LAUGHING AT ALL THE MISTAKES WE'RE MAKING IN LIFE, YOU CAN TELL ME "I TOLD YOU SO" WHEN I GET THERE, LOL. I MISS THE TALKS WE USED TO HAVE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, THE LONG WALKS IN THE WOODS, THE LEAVES WE USED TO RAKE (AND I JUMPED IN THE PILE), BREAKFAST AT JIMMIES RESTAURANT, GARDENING TOGETHER, COMING WITH YOU TO RADIO REGISTRY AND WATCHING YOUR GIGS ("DON'T TALK WHEN YOU SEE THE RED LIGHT"), VISITING FRIENDS AT THE HOT DOG PLACE IN THE CITY AND AT MANNY'S MUSIC, GOING ON THE ROAD AND ALL THE TIMES I HAD TO BRING YOU COFFEE AND CIGG'S IN TO YOUR OFFICE WHILE YOU WERE TEACHING!! REMEMBER EVERYBODY?? NOW MORE THAN EVER I WISH YOU WERE HERE FOR ME AS A DAD AND A MENTOR , A FRIEND AND A TEACHER. I LOVE YOU SO MUCH MY TEETH ITCH!!! AND THINK OF YOU ALL THE TIME. SEE YOU SOMEDAY........... PRINCESS

Happy Birthday
Happy Birthday honey. Still think about you after all these years-yes, everyday.Who would have thought we'd be married for 30 years and if you had lived, we'd be celebrating our 50th now. It's such a "typical story"....the stripper hooks up with the new drummer, they fall in love, live together, get married, buy a house in the country and have 4 kids. When you recorded "Little Egypt" with the Coasters, it was our story-who wrote that anyway? Now we have 4 grandchildren and none of them know you, but we sure talk about you all the time! If there is a heaven (you were sure, I wasn't), then be happy there and maybe our spirits will meet again.

New Breed
Just wanted to let you know that, upon hearing and reading 'New Breed' i feel like my eyes have been opened. His philosophy, systems and almost childlike logic especially with kit set-up resonated with me straight away (sorry for the pun). I wish I could have met him, just once, thank you.

Fortunate Student 84-86
Greeting's to all! I had the wonderful opportunity to study with Gary in 84-86. His inspirational words and direction gave me the wisdom to become the Drummer I want to hear. Gary's philosophy is being taught to all my student's in the NYC area with great success. A big hello to Katrina, Tony Cruz, Bob Sambella, Frank Dickensen, and Cory Roberts. Ciao

Amazing Books
Just a quick note to say that Gary's books have changed my drumming for the better. Im currently working through book two and I love the challenging approach of both books. I feel a real sense of achievement when I complete a page. My students and I agree both books are a must for any drummer. God bless Lewis

Gary's Wisdom
I never met Gary Chester, but the first son I ever wrote with Katrina was about his death. So much of her life came out of his passing. So much of her drive came out of his heart. I see that now, after reading the quotations outlining his philosophy about drumming. But as I peruse through them I couldn't help but feel I was hearing wisdom about how to live one's life, how to focus, how to pace one's self...how to feel the spaces, the rests...even the silences that underscore the brilliant 'voices' of our lives. I'm glad I took the time to reach every line. And I'd like to thank everyone who put this site together. It touched me tonight in a profound manner. He may have passed on years ago, but Gary Chester blessed my life tonight with his words. Thanks, Gary.

Hello everyone! I've been missing Chris, in fact there's a lot of time since our last contact, but I'm seeing that things is going better! congratulations for your great work! Gary Chester is a kind of Force that leads me to a higher level as drummer and as a better person too. His words echoes in my mind every time I sit in a throne behind drums and cymbals, I have no words to express my grateful to Gary and Chriss, except to continue work hard to get better day after day. Thanks a lot, love you all!

Thanks so much to everyone for posting here. Reading your posts really bring a tear to my eye (thanks Roger!). Today was the worst day of my life so many years ago as it was for so many of you, feels like yesterday. Dad died today, actually in a few hours...5am on 17th. So, I just wanted to post and send my love to everyone out there who remembers him and his contribution to the drum community. One in which you all keep so much alive. He would be so proud... The book is being re released in a few weeks AND Chrissy, I and some of my family will be at the Modern Drummer Festival on sept 16th and 17th so maybe we can meet some of you?? We will have a booth there so look for us in lobby! Wait till you hear this CD!!!! Its amazing!!!! For festival tickets (newark NJ, USA) go to moderndrummer.com So today...think about my dad....I know I will be. Love Katrina Chester

I go write in Português, if your need translate, ask for Chriss, hehehe. Aí você lê o New Breed executando o Pé esquerdo. Becouse if you play your left hand in the snare drum, maybe your brain make confuse. Try, becouse for me its be bether in the first time´s in the my lessons. Stay with GOD. See you latter...

GOOD WORK KAT!!!!!!!!!!!!! It brings back memories of all the times I called your Dad to get a list of his local students for our Garage Band in Scott Widney's garage. I guess we played with just about every one that was local at least once. Your dad taught his students to get paid for their work. Hence the reason we only played with most of them once or twice. Or maybe it was because we were so BAD!!!! HA! I hope that all works out with the website. My best to the family. Please give Mandee a hug for me. Uuno

HI Its Gary's Daughter Kat! Till we get this info on the actual website, I wanted to post here about some great news!! About a year ago, student and friend of my father and families, Danny Gotlieb called and he had found a tape of himself interviewing my dad for the very first NB book in 1984! Its incredible and inspirational! To hear his voice but better yet to hear continued lessons and reasons for doing what we all do, MUSIC! Its over an hour long too!! I approached Modern Drummer and they agreed to re release NB1, happily with this bonus, never heard before, CD! Along with beautiful quotes from some students like Kenny Arnoff, Danny Gotlieb, Chrissy Adams, Dave Weckl and many more!!! They are all so excited to have this and so is my family! We couldn't be happier to share this with all of you! Chrissy and I are now working hard on preparing for the release as well as the MD festival Sept 16th and 17th, 2006!!! So, in closing, Look out for: - a huge spread in MD Mag this summer, early fall on my dad written by none other then friend and student Rick Mattingly!! I'm so excited about that because Rick just interviewed me in KY and I got to reunite with him after all these years! -Modern Drummer Festival Sept 16th and 17th which I will be at, selling books and playing a video of one of my dads clinics, along with Chrissy Adams demonstrating some of the system along with some other drummers, and info to study the NB system with Chris! -New Breed Re Release on Sept 16th, 2006, IN STORES!! If you have any comments for Rick Mattingly and what you'd like to see in this spread, questions, etc...please feel free to send it along to my attention through this site or through my email and I will see he gets it, you never know! Of course I can't guarantee anything, its totally up to Rick. Lots of love and good timing to all... Kat Chester

Wow, how cool is this!!! You have to hand it to the Chester's, they really know how important family is and they take very good care of each other. I've known and loved the Chesters for over 20 years and they've always made me feel like a part of the family. I still remember hanging with the Chester girls partying all night and crashing at the house only to be woken up(with a major hangover)by one of Gary's students banging away. Anyone who know's the Chesters know what the definition of love and true friendship is and although I don't stay in touch as much as I used to I hope you know that I still love you all. Congrats on the amazing tribute to an incredible man. Also check out Katrina whenever you can, she'll change your life man!

I studied w/ Gary around 1983; Dave Weckl sent me over to him when he got too famous/busy to give private lessons! I hit it off w/ Gary and gobbled up those intense Systems. I still apply rhythmic vocalization today as a Taketina rhythm teacher (and I'm still very active as a drummer/percussionist, please visit www.lasrubiasdelnorte.com/ for example). I broke from Gary a bit when in 1984, went to music conservatory to study the whole percussion family; Gary Strongly advised me against it but I saw the writing on the wall and knew that the Great Age of the "studio player" was drawing to a close w/ the advent of the Linn Drum, etc. ... But I still love and miss him, and had the pleasure to join a working band w/ Gary's sexy daughter Katrina 7 or 8 years ago. She's very talented and a joy to work with.

I was a student of Garys for one year. He was a very special person and that translated into his special way of teaching. When I took lessons he was teaching his students exercises that eventually turned into his amazing drum book. Going to his house was always a personal experience because he interacted with his family during the lessons. So got to meet his wife and kids. I especially always loved seeing Katrina, because she had that spark, and energy that Gary had. Very cool.

Simply Fantastic! The new breed vol 1 is one of the best books i never see. I'm italian and i have some difficulty to write in english but i try to explane one concept...it's the first time that i really see in a drum book the face, the immagin of the person who have wrote it. When i study on gary's book, "i fell like an immaginary presence with me" my hands are too sure and i really enjoy to study. I hope you feel the same to!

How cool to have found this site! Im a drum teacher from england & I recently disovered Garry's books. I'd never heard the name Garry Chester before but looking at his list of accolades, I realised I'd been listening to his playing all my life. Since using the books as not only a means of improving my own playing but as a valuable teaching tool, I cannot believe how cleverly put together the books are. Many of my students now sing Garry's praises saying things like 'wow thats great' but I as I always point out, imagine being able to write something as good as this. Huge thanx to Garry Chester for hugely improving my technique & for such wonderful inspiration

Hi. I'm excited to have found this website. I studied with Gary in the early 80's for about six months. I have nothing but very fond memories of those lessons because Gary changed me. He believed in me at a time when I needed someone to believe in me. He was tough. Man, I couldn't believe it, but I had to practice three to four hours a day just so I wouldn;t make a fool outta myself at the next lesson. What an experience. He made me work!!He helped make me a much better drummer and musician and I wouldn't have done it without him. I was very sad when I heard the news of Gary's death. Gary's memory and spirit will never be gone. God bless Gary Chester.

Hello everyone! Just a note to say that I know for a fact that Gary's spirit and professionalism live on in his incredibly talented daughter Katrina. Her singing is the kind that comes from some other dimension and really makes you believe in a higher power! I hired her for a jingle session and she showed up on time and ready to roll, even though just hours before, that very day, her home had been partially destroyed by a fire! (don't worry folks, everyone is OK) She had dealt with the fire, the firemen running around in her home, and the fact that she had out-of-town guests that she was supposed to get to the airport before the session. In the face of all this, she refused to cancel, and showed up on time, in good spirits, with a great attitude. We did not even know about any of this until she came in the door. She did a fabulous job on the jingle, singing the principle parts and nailing all the harmonies, often writing her own. Her ability, attitude and talent were amazing, and no-one minded that she smelled like a campfire! Katrina, my hat is off to you and I wish you all the best in your new solo career!

Every so often I take a moment and type Gary's name into the web to see what will come up. You see for me that exercise is (now was) a vain attempt to reach out to him and connect with him as if he would somehow magically appear for me. I miss him so much (and his family) and I think about him almost every day of my life. I was a student of Gary's for several years up until his death and we were very close. He was my teacher and he was my friend. We spent a lot time together fishing and talking. He was and still is the single most significant and vital person (other than my wife) to enter my life. My actions, personality, approach to everything I do was very much shaped by Gary. His photo hangs on my wall over my desk in my office and I imagine his take on business decisions I make. I am hopeful (and sometimes conviced) that he looks in on me from time to time. The night my son was born last year I wished Gary could see him. Today I typed in his name once again and this fantastic site came to me and it was almost as if he was able to say hello. Thank you very much Katrina for this gift to everyone and please forgive me for disappearing. All my love always, Corey Roberts

Hi from Finland! I've been playing drums as a hobby for ten years now. Until lately I've been able to use my imagination to develop my skills by making my own exercises and by playing with various bands. Month ago I decided to buy some books on drumming including Garys books to continue my development. I havent really sat down behind my set practising Garys systems yet but it's obvious that there's totally new world opening for me. I realize it'll take years for me to go through these books but that's what i was looking for: new ambitious goals to work for. Altough you're not reading this Gary, thank you for your work which has and will help many modern drummers to gain skill they never knew existed!

Man, what great books Gary and Chris have written. I've been working out of them for the past 3 years. For me, the secret to Gary's New Breed books is to play a system, sing all the parts until it becomes comfortable, then increase the tempo to where it becomes uncomfortable, and repeat the process. I do this until I can play the system at at a moderateley fast tempo. After I get the tempo thing happening, I'll slow it back down to almost the original tempo (~80bpm) and play the whole system again, over and over, without singing, and focus on the groove. Trying to listen and focus on all limbs and what they are playing all at once. After that, I'll put on some music and play the system along with it. I try to capture the feel of the music and apply it to the system I'm playing. Finding the appriopriate music is the hard part... Finally, I'll play the system but improvise variations of it, switching the patterns around from the different limbs, while making up my own meoldies. This takes me a long long time. One system usually takes me around 2-3 weeks. I really feel that with the right approach, anyone can do it. It's just a matter of systematic progression... Not rushing anything, and especially not finishing a system just to get to the next one. I don't think any of the systems can ever really be completed. Why? You can always go back and work on one and make it groove just a little bit better... Thanks, Gary and Chris!

First of all let me say that I am honored to communicate with an artist of your magnitude. The many recordings you have contributed to are in my collection: Bacharach, Chiffons, Drifters, Aretha, Ben E. King, Little Anthony, Garnet Mims, Patti LaBelle, Platters, Ruby & the Romantics, Freddie Scott, Dionne Warwick. Many of the others are also part of my psyche. Though I found your site quite by accident, it is indeed a happy one. Thank you for the rhythm and the beats. You should write a book describing your experiences within these outstanding productions. It's July 26 th 2003, and i just saw Jenna today at Beechwood Park in Hillsdale New Jersey, at an all day outdoor concert, featuring many great bands. I haven't seen her for many many years. My band OSE played and i had a great time. Anyway, she told me about this site that Katrina made and i had to come and sign the guesbook. I started playing drums at the age of 15 and i basically had taught myself how to play, by listenening and imitating other great drummers such as Ringo Starr, Dave Clark, Charlie Watts, and the like. I started recording with a friend of mine 6 months after i started playing. the recordings were crude but they came out pretty good. It was then that i decided i was going to be a drummer for life. I also decided i wanted to be a professional drummer and make my living off it. More years went by and i kept learning, playing and recording. It was this time i met Tom France Of the T-France band, one of Gary's greatest students, while he was plaing in a bar. I was enthralled by Tom's unbelievable technical skill. I became friends with Tom, and he told me about this great guy he was taking lessons from, by the name of Gary Chester. Anyway, i went on my own initiative over to Gary's house, introduced myself and asked Gary if i could study with him, because i wanted to learn how to read and also improve my playing. He Told me to go over and play his studio kit. I did, and he said ok. I am a reverse lefty, which means i play left hand lead on a right handed, standard drum kit. Gary kinda liked that, but he told me i was gonna have to work hard. Well, I must say, i struggled with the lessons, but i did start to get better, and learned to read. I remember Gary used to say - You gotta practice. Those cat's in the city got their shit down. You better get your shit down, Babe ! he used to call everybody babe. Anyway, i studied with him for about 2 years, then i stopped going. but not after attending 2 of those summer barbeque/drum jams. they were fun. Anyway, i just want to say, that I loved Gary for inspiring me to improve and to wannt to keep playing the drums, which i still do to this day 24 years later. I have played with many famous and well known musicians and recorded on hundreds of songs. Gary was a very important part of my musical experience, and one of which i will always be grateful. We Love You Gary - Mike Stein

Wow ! thanks for making such a great site . I studied with Gary from'83-'86 and I am forever grateful for having known such a special individual if only for a brief time . Gary really helped me to believe that you can do anything , with the right amount of work and spirit . I still am inspired by Gary's concepts and I am amazed in retrospect how patient and generous he was teaching the over-confident ,stubborn but naive 17 yr. old I was when I began my lessons , september of 1983 . In 1985 I saw him perform as a drummer at a local club's sunday brunch . he had reminded me at the last lesson that he would be playing and I wasn't going to miss it .other than giving me tempos with a stick on his ashtray I don't think he ever sat down and played the drumset at my lessons -it was all about MY playing . that's why i was there -anyway . A friend and I went to see Gary play what turned out to be great dixieland jazz and he introduced me to Henry Adler who had also come by to listen . I ran into problems in my second and third yrs. with Gary and he suggested that there was nothing wrong with my drumming but I was bringing my problems along into the lesson "you're thinking of seven things -just think of one " . Now , many years later I have the focus to just be drumming and concentrating on just what I'm playing . He always knew what I really needed to work on . I seem to be rambling a bit so I'll just say thanks again . Gary was the greatest and I smile a little everytime I hear another song on the radio thinking "there's Gary !" best wishes and peace - Mike

Helo! I would like to thank you for this site, I'm 32yo, brazilian drummer and I'm studying "the new breeding" since January 2003. I think that this book are helping me like no other one had done before, it's amazing, my technique is much more better and I'm felling very confortable at the drum set. Gary's work still helping every drummers to achieve higher levels, thank very much! ps.: I hope you'll forgive my terrible english.

I have been thinking about you a lot lately Gary and I wanted to thank you. I thought this was the best place to do it. I was lucky enough to have you come into my life in a very unexpected way. No, I was never lucky enough to meet you but I can say that I am now lucky to have you in my life. It touched my heart everytime I come to this site and see all the incredible things that people say about you. You have touched so many lives in so many ways. I can only hope and try my hardest to effect people the way you have. You created a whole new generation..a whole new breed just as you wanted to. But I wonder if you realaized that all that would go beyond drumming. People that come on here do not only say that you were a great teacher and you greatly improved their skills. They speak of you with such respect and honor..because you didnt only better their technique but you also bettered their lives. And you did this for me as well. There are so many days that your words go through my head and make me not only want more of myself but they give me the strength to work for myself...to better myself..to be strong. You are a mentor to many people...and I hope through this site...you will become a mentor to many more people..just as you have to me. I am going to try my hardest to help you out with this. I only hope I can give you as much as you deserve. Thank you...and your name will live on foever in many people! You are an incredible man indeed.

I Grew up 1 mile from Gary yet didn't Know, meet or study with him until I was 19 and moved out He became a great mentor for me beyond drumming He lit a fire of passion and confidence under me.He just Frankly pointed out and showed me that all the tools necesserry to play with any one .He was a no Bull sh#$%^ cat.Gruff but clear and big hearted. Later I vistited him back from a nice tour With David cassidy he said in front of another student " Jon looks like 1mill $s' but is an asshole cause now he can only play 1 thing well, that gig Now Go back home and practice" !!! That was Gary

Never knew the man but after reading about him in Modern Drummer (Nov 2002) and working with his daughter Gail Chester at Jawonio, I know I have missed the greatest opportunity of a lifetime. Many people who came across Mr. Chester's path were damn lucky and priveledged to do so. May his legacy live forever on thru his music and his family that he loved!

Excellent job. He is truly one of a kind and missed. Spending more time at Jena's, (Gary's) house than my own sometimes, he was like a second Dad to me, (only Gary 'grounded' me more than my Dad.) Beautiful tribute to a wonderful man.

who will ever forget him, what a great man, so much fun and wisdom and sense. Dave Bell took me to meet him when I was on tour from Australia in The Go Betweens and then he taught me by tape. I had to send him tapes playing to a click. I still have his responses. Thanks to Dave Bell for the wonderful opportunity to meet such a brilliant guy.

It's easy to see this site is a labor of love by those that created it. -- Someone so driven and so willing to share and teach, He very much seems to have the true gift of inspiring through teaching both his philosophy and methods. Thank you for the site and educating me about someone that is a focal point of drumming theory and history.
